Birth Nakshatra Calculator
Enter your date, time and place of birth to find your birth nakshatra, its pada and the Vimshottari dasha lord from the Moon's degree. The Moon moves ahead by about one nakshatra a day, so the date alone does not fix the nakshatra; the time is needed. Each nakshatra spans 13 degrees 20 minutes, and we do not count Abhijit as a separate 28th nakshatra beyond the 27.

The working, step by step
How nakshatra and pada are worked out
The Moon's position is calculated astronomically (astronomy-engine) and converted to the zodiac by subtracting the Lahiri ayanamsa. Starting from 0 degrees of Mesha, each nakshatra spans 13 degrees 20 minutes and has four padas. The dasha lord is set by the nakshatra's serial number and cycles in the order Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. The local birth time is converted to universal time using IANA data. Checked on 2026-10-10.
An example
For example, a birth in Delhi on an afternoon gave a Moon degree of 196.7079. This falls within Swati nakshatra: the nakshatra came out as Swati, the pada as 4 and the dasha lord as Rahu.
Limitations
- The Moon moves fast; even a few hours of error in the birth time can change the nakshatra or pada. If you do not know the time, treat the result as an estimate.
- For older dates (especially old Bombay time) the local clock offset of that period may not be fully applied, so check the time.
- The calculation uses the Lahiri ayanamsa; with another ayanamsa, a birth near a nakshatra boundary could fall in a different nakshatra.
