The counting steps, with your own numbers
Marks on the chart
L = lagna, 12 = sign of the 12th house, a planet abbreviation = where its lord sits, UL = Upapada Lagna. The small number in the corner of a house is the sign number (1 Mesha to 12 Meena).
Vrishchika and Kumbha are each said to have two lords; only one lord is used here (Mars and Saturn), because no rule for picking the stronger lord was found. The lagna depends on the birth time, so if the time is not known the upapada is not reliable.
The counting steps
The sign of the 12th house is eleven signs ahead of the lagna. Its lord is taken as the classical lord, that is, Mars for Vrishchika and Saturn for Kumbha. The count from the 12th house sign to the lord's sign (counting both ends) gives a number. Counting that same number from the lord's sign gives the Upapada Lagna. Exceptions: if the Upapada falls on the same 12th house sign, the 10th sign from it is taken, and if it falls 7th from it, the 4th from it is taken. The house of the Upapada from the lagna is also worked out. As a printed source, the translation of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (chapters 29 and 30) was consulted. Checked on 2026-10-10.
An example
Take, for example, a birth in Delhi at 2000-01-01 12:00. The sign of the 12th house is Kumbha and its lord is Saturn, placed in the sign Mesha. Counting from the 12th house to the lord gave the number 3. Counting that same number again from the lord's sign gave the Upapada Lagna Mithuna.
Limitations
- Vrishchika and Kumbha are each considered to have two lords, and the scripture says to take the stronger one, but no rule for judging strength was found for this use. So one lord is taken here (Mars and Saturn), and the page says so.
- The lagna depends on the time of birth; if the time is unknown, the Upapada is not reliable.
- The lagna has so far been verified only against sunrise-time geometry; a comparison of charts with other software is still pending.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find my Upapada Lagna?
First find the sign of the 12th house and its lord, then count from the 12th house to the lord's sign, and count the same number onward from the lord's sign. In the example the 12th house was Kumbha and the Upapada came out as Mithuna. The page shows each of these steps.
