Enter your date, time and place of birth to get your Moon sign (rashi), which is the basis of rashi in the Indian tradition. The Vedic Sun sign and lagna are shown too, with an explanation of why they differ from the Western Sun sign: the ayanamsa of about 24 degrees. The Moon sign needs the time of birth, which is why it often differs from the Sun sign in a newspaper column.

Moon sign vs Sun sign

The Moon's position is calculated astronomically (astronomy-engine) and converted to the zodiac by subtracting the Lahiri ayanamsa. The Moon sign is found by dividing the Moon's degree by thirty. The Western Sun sign is taken without subtracting the ayanamsa and the Vedic Sun sign with it subtracted, so the two differ by about 24 degrees. The local birth time is converted to universal time using IANA data. Checked on 2026-10-10.

An example

In one example birth, the Moon sign came out as Tula, while the Vedic Sun sign was Dhanu and the lagna was Meena. So this person's rashi differs from their Sun sign. Around 10 October the ayanamsa was 24.2311 degrees.

Method and limitations

  • The Moon moves fast; for a birth near a rashi boundary, even a few hours of difference can change the rashi. If you do not know the time, treat the result as an estimate.
  • The calculation uses the Lahiri ayanamsa; with another ayanamsa, a birth near a boundary could fall in a different rashi.
  • For older dates (especially old Bombay time) the local clock offset of that period may not be fully applied, so check the time.
