The rule we apply

We use the form in which a person is considered Manglik if Mars is in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house from the lagna (whole-sign houses). The same check made from the Moon is called Chandra-Manglik and shown as partial. We do not use the South Indian form that adds the second house, nor the check from Venus, but an option to add the second house is kept on the page. If Mars is in its own or exaltation sign (Mesha, Vrishchika, Makara) or both partners are Manglik, the effect is shown as reduced. Planetary positions are calculated with astronomy-engine using the Lahiri ayanamsa. Checked on 2026-10-10.

An example

As an example, take a birth in Delhi at 2000-01-01 12:00. Mars came out in house number 12 from the lagna, which is among the houses in the rule, while from the Moon it was in house number 5. So the result was: Manglik.

Limitations

  • Several forms of the Manglik definition are in use; we have chosen one and stated it on the page. The form with the second house is available as an option.
  • This result alone is not a verdict on any relationship; treat it as one piece of information in a conversation with your family and a pandit.
  • The lagna depends on the birth time; if the time is not known, the house counted from the lagna is not reliable, and because the Moon's rashi can change, the house counted from the Moon is only an estimate too.
  • The lagna has so far been checked only against sunrise-time geometry; a comparison of charts with other software is still pending.
  • This information is for guidance and tradition, and is not a substitute for professional advice.
