The qualifying months taken are Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Margashirsha, Magha and Phalguna, and Adhik Maas and Kharmas are left out. If Jupiter or Venus is set (combust), the day is not counted. The vara must be Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. The tithis Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi, Purnima and Amavasya are left out. The Moon's nakshatra at sunrise must be Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Anuradha, Revati or Hasta. Chaturmas, from Devshayani to Prabodhini Ekadashi, is also excluded. This set of rules is taken from prevailing tradition. Checked on 2026-10-10.

The rules we apply

An example

The day 2026-05-20 fell in the month of Jyeshtha, but did not qualify. The page gave two reasons: Adhika masa and tithi excluded. By contrast, the day 2026-03-05 in the month of Phalguna met all the conditions.

Limitations

These rules are taken from prevailing tradition. Muhurta Chintamani has rules for a new home that differ in some respects, such as the list of nakshatras, the month of Margashirsha and the choice of Saturday; so confirm the date with your pandit.
