Sunrise, sunset, tithi and nakshatra come from astronomical calculation (astronomy-engine). Choghadiya is made by dividing the day from sunrise to sunset into eight equal parts. Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal also use the eight equal parts of the day; Abhijit is the eighth of fifteen equal parts of the day; and Brahma Muhurat is the time from 96 to 48 minutes before sunrise. A green time is one that falls in an Amrit, Shubh, Labh or Chal Choghadiya, does not overlap Rahu Kaal and does not fall in Vishti karana. Parts such as Kulika, Kalavela and Yamaghantaka are taken from Muhurta Chintamani. Checked on 2026-10-10.
An example: Delhi
In Delhi, one day was a Shanivara. Sunrise was at 06:19. Abhijit Muhurat ran from 11:45 to 12:31, while Rahu Kaal fell from 09:13 to 10:41. So on that day the Shubh Choghadiya, from 07:46 to 09:13, was the first good time after sunrise.
Method and limitations
- The choice of muhurat differs slightly across traditions and regions; for major events such as marriage or Griha Pravesh, ask your family's pandit.
- Abhijit Muhurat can be switched, as an option, to follow the Wednesday rule; by default it is shown every day.
- Durmuhurat is not shown for now, because its table was not found in the printed source.
- The calculation is based on the Lahiri ayanamsa and a sea-level observer; at a higher-altitude place, sunrise can differ by about a minute.
