Name Letter and Rashi from Date of Birth

Enter the child's date, time and place of birth to find the rashi, birth nakshatra, pada and the first letter of the name. The letters for all four padas of the nakshatra show together, and the letter of the pada in which the birth took place is marked, so that you can think of several names that match it. The decision on the name is entirely the family's; the page only gives the letter according to tradition.

How the letter is decided

The Moon's position is calculated astronomically (astronomy-engine) on the Lahiri ayanamsa, and from it the rashi, nakshatra and pada are decided. Traditional name letters are fixed for the four padas of each nakshatra; the letter of your pada is marked and the other three are shown alongside. The local time of birth is converted to universal time using IANA data. Checked on 2026-10-10.

An example

For example, take a birth in Delhi on 2000-01-01 12:00. The Moon sign came out as Tula, the nakshatra as Swati and the pada as 4. The name letter for this pada is Ta, which the page also shows in Devanagari.

Limitations

  • The nakshatra changes with the Moon's motion; if the birth time is wrong even by a few hours, the pada and letter can change. If the time is not known, treat the letter as an estimate.
  • The table of name letters is traditional and varies slightly across regions; one chosen form is used here.
  • Many families choose the letter of the name in other ways too. This information is for guidance and tradition, and is not a substitute for professional advice.
