Letter values

Each letter gets a value from the Chaldean table: for example A, I, J, Q and Y get one, B, K and R get two, F and P get eight, and O gets seven. No letter gets nine. Adding all the values gives the compound number, and reducing it to between one and nine gives the root number. This page works from the name only, not the date of birth. The ruling planets of the root number are: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars. Checked on 2026-10-10.

An example

For an example name, the letter values came out as: P=8 R=2 I=1 Y=1 A=1 S=3 H=5 A=1 R=2 M=4 A=1. Their total, the compound number, was 29. Reducing it to a single digit gave the root number 2.

Method and limitations

  • The Chaldean and Pythagorean tables give different results; this page uses only the Chaldean method.
  • The meanings of the compound numbers are short texts written by us, for interest and guidance, not predictions.
  • Changing the spelling of a name changes the number, so enter exactly the spelling that is in use.
